you have no certainty until you try.

- abc_usa (ABC USA: State Notebooks, State Projects) - EVERYONE IS WELCOME!* Come join the fun! We're looking for new, active members!
This group is for those of you who are interested in making State ABC books, as well as Notebooks, Lapbooks, Unit Studies, State Reports, etc., or for those of you who are interested in sharing basic state information with your children or students. Individual state sites have been set up for each state, as well. For example: abc_usa_NewYork, and so on. State specific information will be available on each state site. Example: "California: Famous People" will be kept on abc_usa_California site.
Members are encouraged to contribute something unique about their state. If you have general states info (pertains to all 50 states), please include it in our 'Links' section. All links are stored in an archive that members can view. Please feel free to share worksheets, pictures, web sites, etc. You can make a USA book with one page for each state, or pick a state and make a separate book for each state starting with A on through Z. This goes for notebooks and lapbooks as well. Please post any general state ideas to this group, and share with us how you are making your books. State specific information may be posted to the individual state sites.

- flat_travelers_homeschool (Flat Travelers Homeschool) - This idea is based on the book "Flat Stanley". A Flat Traveler is a person, animal or thing made out of paper. You print or draw your Traveler, laminate it and then mail it along with a blank journal to someone in another area, state or country. The host family treats your Flat Traveler as a guest and takes it places they go. After a short time your Flat Traveler is mailed back to you along with a completed journal and perhaps some photos, postcards and/or souvenirs. You look over your Flat Travelers journey and plot it on a map. Some families keep a scrapbook with all their journals, souvenirs and photos inside.
Some families send out one Flat Traveler and other families send out dozens! You can make this project as simple or as detailed as you like. This is a fun way to learn about geography and history among many other subjects!
This group has been formed to give homeschool families a group of participants to contact worldwide. As a member of this group you should be prepared to host Flat Travelers from other families as well.
It is my hope that many friendships will be made through this list. Come join the fun!
Flaming, spamming or any other rude behavior will NOT be tolerated. Members not abiding by this rule will be removed and banned.
Anyone can join the group. However, anyone starting any kind of heated debate will immediately be put on moderated status. If the behavior continues that member will be removed from the group and banned. This group was created to discuss flat traveling and our experiences in homeschooling.

- HomeschoolMilitary (Homeschooling Military Families) - Welcome to all parents of U.S. 'Military Brats' regardless of branch of service. Active Duty, Activated-Reservists and Guards, as well as IRR-families are welcome.
Those of us who grew up as 'Brats' know that repeated moves can lead to gaps in our education, or to simple confusion when teaching standards between school districts are dissimilar. Homeschooling, while living the 'military lifestyle' can be a rich experience, in addition to easing some of the bumps in the educational road.
This list does not discriminate in regards to your haircut, shoe-size, fiction-preference, sportliness or preferred after-dinner tipple. So, anchors aweigh my boys, as those caissons go rolling with one helluva roar, north and south and east and west, from the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli. Hoo-ah!

- hsshoeboxswap (The ShoeBox Swap Place for Homeschoolers) - This is a list for homeschool families to swap "shoeboxes" that reflect their geographical area and their family.
We do a list once a month(on the 2 or 3 of the month). After that list closes, it can take a week or so to put the list together because of large number of people swapping. So you should have your swap partner by the 10th of the month. We swap inexpensive packages that contain items that are representative of where we live. Let the kids make a card or a picture of your house, or share something they love about their area. Include some of the more interesting points about where you live and about you; maps, postcards, little things that show what you love about where you live. Let the kids get creative. It can be a lot of fun and educational. Pick up things on a nature walk; a cool rock, shell, pine cones, etc.(But, do not transport things that could cause an infestation. Check w/postal service)
*This is a great way to learn geography, and learn about your own area at the same time.
*When you join, you do not select no mail. Select special notices instead.***If you do select "no mail", it will be changed to "special Notices"*** Special Notices means you will get a copy of the swap list. No mail means you wont.
*Also, we've had to make it a rule that if you have 3 failed swaps, as in you don't send a package, and someone else complains,or you drop out of 3 swaps after the list comes out, then you will be removed from the list.
This is only fun if everyone involved actually does what they say they will.Signing up for a swap is a commitment. Things do come up,that's understandable, but it shouldn't be a habit.
ABSOLUTELY NO SPAM!! This will get you removed/banned.(yes reasonable sig lines are okay).
*UPON JOINING, PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR LOCATION WITH YOUR MEMBERSHIP REQUEST. Then, to get started, follow the instructions in the email that will be sent to you upon your memberships approval. IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS, YOU ARE NOT SWAPPING!!!!

The Scrambled States of America by Laurie Keller
|
| Books that claim to "make geography fun" usually have to be taken with a dose of skepticism: so often, the teaching is there and the entertainment isn't. This delightfully quirky and original book shows how it should be done. Readers will unwittingly learn more than they bargained for about the (finally) United States, while poring over the endless witty remarks exchanged over state lines.
