The object of teaching a child is to enable the child to get along without the teacher. We need to educate our children for their future, not our past.

- WASTRHomeschoolers (Washington State Relaxed Homeschoolers) - Come discuss home and unschooling with us. We discuss the ins and outs, the joys, the heartaches, the doubts, the triumphs, the fun and the frenzy of educating your own children.
There is a continuum of homeschooling from sitting down and doing school at a set time everyday to just doing what your child wants and never making any schedule, from using all textbooks and workbooks to never letting a single one in your house or near your child. The point of unschooling is following your child's lead and responding to your child's needs. That is what this group is designed to discuss. You don't have to be an unschooler to be here. You just have to be open about and friendly towards unschooling.
Heated debates are good (many of us enjoy them). Liberal and open discussion is good. All I ask is that we all respect each other's opinions and our right to have them. Intention is not always clear in email. If you are unsure of a person's meaning; ask them, either on the list or privately. If you have a problem with a post, you have a few options: 1) take it up with the person (onlist or off); 2) take it up with the moderator (offlist please) or 3) use your delete key (that's my favorite, smile).
Feel free to suggest get togethers, meetups, play dates, field trips. Thank you for visiting and welcome!

- WHEN (The Washington Home Education Network) - Since the early to mid 1990s the Washington Home Education Network (WHEN)has been for those interested in homeschooling in Washington state, particularly legislative news and discussion.
WHEN welcomes Home-based Instruction as well as Parent Partnered or other public school families. There is a wealth of resources families can share and benefit from as well as legislation and policies related to both choices. WHEN supports the laws which distinguishes between these programs and Home-based Instruction(homeschooling). This list is for sharing resources and networking with like (or unlike) families. We watch and DISCUSS legislative actions and/or policies of our state government, school boards and local municipalities as they relate to families who educate their children under the above laws. Please take the time to know which law your family is operating under.
Discussion is encouraged on WHEN and you may read things you disagree with. Civility and passion for a cause are not mutually exclusive.
In essence, users are expected to read each post with intent to understand the point the poster is trying to make. When composing posts, respond to the argument; do not attack the person who made the argument. As a participant here I hope you make a commitment not only to learn more about legislative issues, but also to improve your own ability to communicate effectively with the diverse group of homeschoolers on this list, as well as with legislators, the media, and the public at large. I encourage everyone to use their delete key if particular ideas or presentations offend them. I am not your Momma. I resist banning or moderating, however this owner and moderators reserve the right to use this tool in the hopes of creating a “cooling down” period.
